Student reviews of Conrad Fjetland

Review from a student who took 118K
Fjetland is a pretty good guy, but your grade depends pretty much on your TA. Switch if you don't like him/her, and do go to office hours to make sure you're doing labs right. The class itself is incredibly tedious. There are too many write-ups which take up too much time for the measly one hour of credit received.
Review from a student who took CH 210C
You grade depends almost solely on your TA, so be sure to have a good TA otherwise try to switch or just drop it. The labs are not very difficult but takes a long time, and the lab reports get really tedious. The thing i hate the most is the NMR homework (you'll have to do this in WEL computer lab), they never make sense to me. He gives quizzes in almost every single lecture. You have to pay close attention and try to memorize the important info quickly because he'll quiz you by end of the class over what he has just talked about. The final is hard! Be sure you write really good notes on your lab notebook because you'll get to use it for the final.
Review from a student who took CH 210C
This class sucks, it isn't that the labs are hard, they're just take so much time (on average 3.5 of the 4 hours). The lectures were somewhat helpful in understanding the concepts. You should attend and take notes because you'll basically have to restate what he says in lecture on your lab reports. There were 3 quizzes throughout the semester that were pretty hard. Almost all of your grade though is determined by your lab TA. Don't be too concerned if you find yourself making 65-70 average on your lab reports, I did, but I ended up with a B after the curve. It actually may work in your favor to have a TA that grades hard. The computer assignments really suck and are a complete waste of time. I still don't know how to read or interpret IRs and NMRs.

Orgo lab is tough, you can try your hardest on the writeups and still do poorly; I suggest visiting your TA to make sure you are doing things right, don't be lazy like me and do badly. As for lectures, he gives quizzes which I found hard, maybe because I didn't study enough but I was told that if you are attentive during lecture he gives all the information you need to know. If you have an intimidating TA like mine maybe you should switch sections if you can--your grade depends mostly on the TA. As for Dr. Fjetland, he didn't strike me as an intellectual, I in fact had a hard time believing he was a PhD. He looks like your average American guy, and perhaps that's why I never paid attention during lecture. The final is short but it is cumulative and questions can be tough about specific portions of the class. He's the only 118K prof right now so you don't have much choice.

This class is a total waste of time. I hated this lab. The writeups are so incredibly tedious, and there are too many of them. A lot depends on your TA. Fjetland can be condescending and his lectures are less than riveting. You will learn very little in this class, but it will suck up so much of your time.

Cool guy, can't really complain. It's all about the TAs anyways.
Review from a student who took ch 118k
Fjetland's lectures are very helpful with the labs so be sure to attend them. He also has easy pop quizes during some fo the lectures. Your grade in this class depends on your TA so be sure to get a good TA. Also make sure you know what your TA wants in your lab reports. The workload is very excessive for a lab that you only get 1 hour of credit.
Review from a student who took ch 118L
the workload for this class is outrageous. fjetland himself is a great lecturer and great prof!
Review from a student who took 118K
This is a normal lab that you encounter at UT. Difficult to your mind only because the workload is very excessive compared to the ONE hour of credit you receive. Fjetland (pronounced F-yet-land) is a funny guy if you understand his humor. The lectures help a lot if you need a crash course on the experiments, and the experiments are quite thorough. Grades are given by the TA's, but in the end everything is dependant on how much Fjetland liked your class in the end. As you can see 118K receives good grades for about 45% of the class, do the work and don't slack, easy A.
Review from a student who took CH 220C
Fjetland gives really great lectures. Makes principles very straightforward. In lecture, write down EVERYTHING that is discussed, and then talk about it in your lab report. This was my strategy and I ended up ranked first in my section. I didn't even use the book for my reports. Just lecture material. Every TA grades differently, but I think they all have similar guidelines. This lab is really frustrating at first, there are a lot of things that come up and make you feel like, "Ugh, someone should have told me about this." Pre-lab quizzes are horrible, don't stress out too much preparing because there will always be questions out of nowhere that you never would have known you needed to know... Just know procedure and main reaction for quizzes, and understand what was discussed in lecture. As far as safety goes, you'll pretty much have all the general treatments memorized. Don't go out of your way to memorize more than that. This lab will be horribly, horribly stressful at first. If you have a good TA, you will soon realize it's really not a big deal. You'll just have to get through all the countless frustrations that arise.
