Student reviews of Richard Byars

Review from a student who took MIS 333K
Rick is a great professor, and he shows it through the hard work he has his students do. Fall 2003 was the first semester in which we had to use VB.NET and ASP.NET, so he was learning with the rest of us. He assigned six VB homework assignments, took attendance five times, gave the first exam in written form and the other two in the computer lab, and used the same project specifications as Spring 2003. (He probably won't reuse the Wimberley Quad Theatres specs again in the future since he is becoming more familiar with VB and ASP.NET.) Rick is very willing to answer questions both in class and in office hours, and he hires great TAs.
Review from a student who took MIS 304
I like Professor Byars a lot. He's a smart talker but his class is relatively easy. VB.Net is just one of those things where you either get it or you don't. He tries to make it as simple as possible though. He goes through the assignments and basically writes out the code for you before you have to turn it in. I never had any problem and after the first assignment I made perfect scores on the rest. A lot of people seem to get Bs (or worse) in his class but I honestly don't see how. Go to office hours, visit the TA, and use the VB.Net proctors in the Mil lab and you should be okay. If you're interested in being a MIS major, make sure you make friendly with him since he's also the teacher for 333K.
